Your Fundraising Annual Appeal Letters Need A Villian

Anger is one of the best emotions that you can arouse in a donor. Anger is a healthy emotion, particularly when your fundraising letter offers donors a way to assuage their anger. Individuals are more prone to respond to a genuine feeling of anger than to any other emotion, says Roland Kiniholm in his book, Maximum Gifts by Return Mail.

To make your donors angry, you need a villain. Villains are good. They help you focus your donors attention on one problem that needs fixing. That villain can be a person or a problem.

My advice is that you never name a particular person as your villain, since doing so is not very charitable, excuse the pun. Plus, you might get sued for defamation of character or slander. Instead, you should attack the catastrophe that the villain has created, or simply make the catastrophe the villain.

  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving has a villain: drunk driving (not drunken drivers)
  • The Coalition Against Gun Violence has a villain: gun violence (not gun owners)
  • Oxfam has a villain: poverty (not the wealthy)
  • Habitat for Humanity has a villain: unaffordable housing (not landlords)

Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast of the United States last week. The response by the US federal government to the plight of tens of thousands of refugees stranded in New Orleans was so slow that hundreds likely perished. For days, we saw the images on our television screens of stranded citizens dying in New Orleans while help tarried.

In your fundraising letter to raise funds for these hurricane victims, you could name President Bush as your villain. You could blame the plight of the displaced people on Federal Emergency Management Agency director Michael Brown, who many are saying is responsible for the delays that caused so many deaths. Or you could blame the mayor of New Orleans. But these attacks would sound unkind. And painting any of these men as the villain right now would be premature.

Instead, a successful appeal letter would paint the hurricane as the villain. Or point the finger at the flooding as the villain.

Your fundraising campaign can have a villain and still be positive. The Red Cross, for example, is running a fundraising campaign right now with this theme: Hope is Stronger than a Hurricane. Theres only one thing wrong with that theme. I didnt think of it.

If you want to stir up one of the strongest human emotions to your advantage, chose a villain that your donors can get angry at. Then show how your non-profit organization can alleviate that anger by eliminating (or, more realistically, weakening) that villain.

Business Opportunity Ideas for the Stay-at-Home Mom

As a stay-at-home mom, you might be seeking employment or business opportunities that enable you to earn a full-time or part-time income from home. Maybe you'd like to work flexible hours, stay home with your children, or avoid high gasoline and car maintenance costs. Whatever the reason, there are many opportunities online today that can help you achieve your goals and earn some extra cash.

Three Options for a Home-Based Business

There are three ways to approach a home business. You can offer products of your own such as clothing, crafts, hair supplies, books, or herbal supplements, build your own website, and stock your own inventory. Unfortunately, this takes much time to build and requires a start-up investment. If you want to offer your own product line, be prepared to wait a while for profits. But keep in mind that this option can be the most profitable for the future if you stick with it.

Another option is to offer a unique service such as accounting or bookkeeping, answering services, Web development or programming, business consulting, or writing. Offering a service has benefits over selling tangible products because you only charge for your "time and skills" but not to restock inventory.

A third option is to sell products or services for others and earn a commission on your sales. This works great if you have limited time to work on your business and need to spend most of your time promoting. This option can be just as profitable as having your own home business without the many headaches of business management.

Types of Business Opportunities when Selling for Others

Though time and space doesn't permit discussion of all business opportunities here, let's take a look at several possibilities. Beauty products are a popular choice for ladies. Most women love to try out new skin creams, lotions, soaps, makeup, and lip glosses. Because you can try out the beauty products yourself, you are more informed on how well they work and how to persuade others to buy them. Some companies offer tremendous compensation when you sell their beauty products for them. They'll even provide a website for you with all of their products and a shopping cart for your customers to make purchases.

Another type of product that's popular is clothing. Clothing is very general, so you'll want to focus in on one particular style or line of clothing. Find a "niche" market within the clothing industry that you can promote to certain types of people. Online, it's easier to promote to small niche markets instead of trying to promote to a general audience.

Tech support is another much-needed field that's often ignored by mainstream companies. There are business opportunities today that enable you to promote tech support services to the public and receive a healthy commission. The tech support services are all provided by the company online, but you reap the benefits. Your audience is broad because so many people own computers today... and need help with them!

Other business opportunity ideas include health supplements, educational training products and online education, kitchenware, furniture, household products, pet products, and home and garden products.

Whether you choose to start your own business or sell products for someone else, you can use the Internet to achieve your goals and still be a content stay-at-home mom!

Hospitality Jobs - Career Prospects

There will always be employment out there for the experienced hospitality worker however what type of establishment will you work for? To answer this question you first have to have an understanding of the different types of organisations there are, what their goals and objectives are and how they operate. Then you can make a decision that best fits what your goals and personality requires. The following will give you a very broad overview of the different types of businesses there are within the industry. However you must remember that no two hotels or clubs or restaurants will operate the same or have the same objectives so this is a very general overview. We will only deal with the main types of establishments.

Registered Clubs

Most sizeable towns in Australia have at least one licensed club that usually provides food and beverage services, along with gaming, entertainment, and sporting facilities for members and guests. All clubs share certain characteristics - they are voluntary, non-profit organisations that have been established by groups of people that share a common interest.

Many people see clubs such as Panthers or Monties in NSW and ask the question, how can these clubs operate without profit? (Panthers is the biggest Club in the southern hemisphere). What non-profit organisation means, is that the money or profit that is generated does not go to one individual or group and can only be used to improve member's facilities.

Different types of clubs include the following.

  • Sporting interests such as leagues clubs and bowling clubs
  • Returned services affiliations such as RSL or Ex-services clubs
  • Workers clubs or professional interests clubs
  • Ethnic or religious clubs

Pubs/Night Clubs

These types of establishments can offer similar types of services that clubs do such as food and beverage, gaming and entertainment. Pubs can also offer interest in sporting groups such as darts, snooker or pool and fishing among others. However they do differ from clubs in that there is no legal requirement of these organisations to contribute profits to the community, like clubs have to, and individuals or groups can own pubs/night clubs. That means these people make all the decisions and pocket the profits.

And there is certainly nothing wrong with that, however you must be aware that these organisations are run by private enterprise. This can be good or can be bad depending on the owners or managers. Some pubs because they are run privately are run extremely efficiently, effectively and professionally, even more so than clubs because they are not tied down with politics and red tape. However other pubs or nightclubs are run very poorly.

How can you tell the difference? Once again this is up to the individual and what you feel comfortable with. The best thing to do is visit the place before you start work or even before you apply for a job, if that is possible. Look at things like how clean is the establishment (I don't mean how modern it looks, I mean is it physically clean), what type of patrons are there and how do the staff treat you. This will give you a good idea if you will be comfortable working in their environment

Accommodation Hotels

As one might expect this type of establishment is primarily concerned with providing accommodation. They can range from 1 or 2 staffed back packer hotels to large establishments with hundreds of staff. The large organisations such as Hilton, Park Royal etc receive hundreds if not thousands of job applications every year and competition for those job is great. However there tends to be high turnover of staff in these organisations so there are generally openings available.

Accommodation is their main service however they also provide food and beverage services, some have golf courses, gyms, some are owned by casinos and clubs. Some of their services are open to the public; some are private for their guests only. The services these establishments provide are almost as vast and as varied as the establishments themselves.

Career prospects within the large hotels are also vast. Chef, bar tenders, room service attendants, admin staff, maintenance or grounds keepers, security, concierge, storeman, laundry workers, porters, reception staff, waiters and food service personnel, the list can go on and on.

Restaurants and cafes

There are many different types of restaurants and cafes, which can be classified in many different ways. For example restaurants and cafes can be classified by the region the cooking style or ingredients came from e.g. Italian, Asian or classified by menu style e.g. a la carte or buffet or classified by service style, casual dining or fine dining. They can be licensed (can sell alcohol) or not and the vast majority of these are owner operator establishments and employ less than 15 staff.

There is a high degree of failure rate of these types of establishments; this is mostly due to inexperience. I found out the hard way that just because you can cook does not mean that you can manage a business (I will be writing a book on how to avoid the pit falls in the near future). However there are some very professional establishments that can offer very professional training and experience. When I first left school I started in a modern Italian restaurant in Balmain in Sydney's inner west. Although I didn't appreciate it much at the time, the work ethic that I learnt helped carry me throughout my professional life.

How to Calculate the Break Even Period When Refinancing Your Mortgage

To save money when refinancing your mortgage it is helpful to know when your break-even period ends. This break even period when mortgage refinancing is the amount of time it takes to recoup your expenses from taking out the new loan. As a rule of thumb, the lower your new mortgage rate is compared to the old one, the shorter your break even period will be when refinancing.

One way to calculate your break even period is to divide the cost of your new mortgage by the amount of reduction in your monthly payment. While this will give you a general idea of your break even period it does not account for changes in the amortization schedule of your new loan. Heres an example to illustrate this point.

Suppose you refinance your existing mortgage that had a balance of $100,000 and it costs you $3,500 in origination fees. The monthly payment of your new loan is now $1,015 which saves you $115 per month with a 15 year loan. Divide your expenses by the savings and you come up with approximately 30 months to recoup your expenses. This calculation does not take into consideration the shorter term length and lower interest rate of the new loan.

Calculating the break even point assumes you are refinancing with a lower interest rate and payment amount; however, there are perfectly good reasons for refinancing with a higher mortgage rate and payment amount. Many homeowners take a higher payment when refinancing with cash back or even shortening the term length. You can learn more about your mortgage refinancing options, including costly pitfalls to avoid with a free mortgage toolkit.

Social Security Number Search - How to Find People by Social Security Numbers

With identity theft at an all time high, many people and businesses are constantly looking for ways to conduct social security number searches online. There are a number of reasons for needing to search social security numbers.

Maybe you need to verify a social security number given to you by a potential employee or renter to verify its authenticity. Maybe you are compiling genealogy data for your family history and you have a social security number but you do not know what family member it belongs to.

As you can probably tell, there are many reasons people may need to find people by social security number or confirm a social security number online. In the next few paragraphs, we're going to look into several free and paid resources where you can conduct social security number research online. Let's get started.

  • If you simply need to verify the authenticity of a social security number given to you by a prospective employee or renter, you can do so at the United States Social Security Website. The exact web address with detailed instructions is: http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnv.htm. At this website, you are allowed to verify up to 10 social security numbers daily. This is a free service provided by the United States Federal Government.
  • If you have a social security number, but you do not know whom it belongs to and you would like to find a person using it, things can get a little trickier. Since public record databases do not list social security numbers, you will probably need to help of a private investigator or an online private investigation service like Abika.com, BestPeopleSearch.com or some other similar service.
  • Another option is to join a private investigative membership service, which gives you access to the same powerful research databases used by professional private investigators. These memberships can be significantly cheaper than paying a private investigator, but you will need to do your own research. Pricing normally ranges from $29 to $59 annually for unlimited access to the member's area.
  • If you need to find someone's social security number, there are a number of ways to do this too. If the person is deceased, you can get his or her social security number for free by simply looking up a name at http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/. If the person is living, you will need to use one of the private investigative methods mentioned in previous paragraphs.
There you have it. These are the most common ways to research social security numbers and to find people using social security numbers online.

Is A Doctor's Past Legal History Admissibile In My Current Lawsuit?

In New York, if my doctor has been sued, and I bring a lawsuit against him now, can I use his prior cases against him at trial to show how bad he really is?

The quick answer is no, you can't. Remember, just because someone has brought a lawsuit in the past, doesn't necessarily establish that he/she is responsible for the patient's injuries. The facts of each case are very important. The previous case may have nothing to do with the type of claim you intend on bringing.

Even if the cases were somewhat similar, New York law does not allow us to use the prior case to establish that this particular doctor was responsible for your injuries in your case. In some limited instances, we might be able to prove habit or a pattern of behavior. For the most part, we cannot use it.

For example, if you get a ticket for running a red light and the following week get pulled over for driving over the speed limit- the fact that you had a prior ticket for running a red light has nothing to do with whether you were speeding one week later.

Does that mean it has no value? Absolutely not. When we investigate a case, we look to see if the doctor has been sued before, who was sued with him, who the attorneys were, and what the outcome of the case was. In some cases, we contact the attorneys who represented the patient to inquire about the facts of their case, to see if there are any similarities with your case.

If we know that a doctor has a history of being sued, we use it to negotiate a better settlement for you, as the doctor's insurance company will surely have information about the doctor's lawsuit history.

General Identity Theft Statistics Revealed

The number of identity theft cases has been increasing to this day. In fact, according to statistics, the Federal Trade Commission reported that for 4 continuous years, this crime has been on the top of the list of the consumer complains.

It has been assumed that this problem mounted to over 42 percent of the complaints that has lodged in the FTC Consumer Database in the year 2004 and has increased for about 40 percent in the year 2002.

According to the FTC statistics, there are approximately 10 million consumers, mostly American have discovered that their personal information have been intentionally used to open up a fraudulent bank account, utility accounts and credit card.

The worst is that their personal information have been wrongfully used to commit serious crimes with their names. In the FTC identity theft statistics, there had been more than 50 percent of the theft victims of accounts such as credit cards and other fraud accounts.

Mostly, new credit cards have been used for fraud activities. This happens when a thief opens up new accounts using other people names. This theft statistics have estimated that this have victimized over 3.23 million people in the world. this big number is continuously increasing in number.

Statistics have shown that it has cost nearly $53 billion for both existing and new accounts. This is a large number includes individual and business victims in a year. No wonder why this big number increases every year and is very hard to cease.

To be specific, this theft statistics have shown that 47.5 billion people have been victims of identity theft. The individual victims are counted to have $500 per victim in a year.

According to the news, most Americans have spent about 300 million hours in resolving the arising issue which is related to identity crime cases. It has been estimated that in every 30 to 60 hours a victim handles various matters, which are related to cases of stolen identity which includes creating an account or using existing accounts.

These problems have proven that the people who have been victimized by identity theft know the thieves who have stolen their precious and unique names and identity. To avoid this from happening, you should not share important information so that other people cannot access your accounts in any way. Make sure that the people you share important information with can be trusted.

People whom you think cannot do this crime to you are the ones who have the strong will to do it. Make sure that they will not have any idea on how to restore such important information. Someone very close to you can be a suspect. Anyone around you can be suspect and they choose no one so you need to be very careful.

Statistics have shown that it starts in the workplace. You might not know it but they could be your officemates, co-worker, employee that you are patronizing.

Most identities of employees have been stolen because of their connections to companies that are not handled carefully. Sometimes, your boss can even be the suspect. He can have access to the personal information, which he can retrieve upon application.

This crime have shown that in the year 2004, the complaints have been up for about 15 percent which was from the year 2003.

In the last five years, it has been reported by the Identity Theft Statistics that more than 25 million people have been victims of the case. It is no wonder that until now, the number of cases is still extremely high and rising. Most Americans have experienced identity theft.

Identity theft was on the top of the complaints in the year 2004 and is still getting higher. The identity theft victims naturally spend 175 hours to use for their personal time and about $800 just to clear their names and restore their credit history.

The Federal Trade Commission have estimated that a victim will spend 14-16 months of clearing their names in cases of identity theft. So it is important that you keep your accounts safe because if you are a victim, you cannot fix your credit easily and it will take too long.

Simply knowing what you read in this article isn't enough. You have to put it into action to be successful. To learn how to do exactly that - and to learn more about Willie DeJarnette, you will want to visit Willie DeJarnette's website at the following link: Identity Theft
